“…even though the lock-down is relaxed in many countries and employees can return to working from their desks in offices, some employees have continued to work from home. This has become the new normal for a lot of people and the number of people working from home will continue to increase with time.”
PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | FEBRUARY 3, 2022
For many of us, before the Covid-19 pandemic that hit on a global scale at the start of 2020, we enjoyed leaving our homes to go to the office every day. We wake up early, rush out of our home and wade through the rush hour traffic to work.
Then, we endure hours of work; sometimes we don’t have much to do but can’t leave until it is closing time when we have to clock out. Going back home is another chore, faced with rush hour traffic and either driving or boarding buses or cabs. By the time we get home we are so tired we can barely function, but what can we do? We endure this every day so we can be paid at the end of the month or week.
Then comes the lock-downs and we had to work from home. Teaching was done from home because schools had to continue making money and students needed to keep learning. There was a rush to learn how to use software and mobile apps that aids teaching and learning online. At the same time, employees of businesses had to do their work from home. Online meetings became the norm and those tools that we refused to learn how to use became our best friends if we were to stay on the job and get paid at the appointed payment date.
At the time I was still teaching in a couple of schools as a contract and craft teacher, aside from the other works that I did remotely. One of the schools where I was working as a teacher also joined the list of schools that provided classes to their students remotely. It was a major challenge at the start of the lock-down for most of the teaching workforce since the limit of their use of online tools was the social media platforms and those where not even used to full capacity.
For weeks every one of the teaching staff had to learn the use of online teaching mobile apps and software for PC. We tried out a few before we agreed on which to use that allows for video classes, allowed students to view and download lesson notes as well as submit assignments, and allowed the teachers to not only upload lesson notes and assignment but also grade them and conduct class tests.
Some schools have continued to use the online teaching method even though students are back in the physical classrooms. The same is applicable to businesses, even though the lock-down is relaxed in many countries and employees can return to working from their desks in offices, some employees have continued to work from home. This has become the new normal for a lot of people and the number of people working from home will continue to increase with time. What does this mean? In time you will only be relevant if you are able to use the various tools that allows you to work remotely and to do it effectively either working alone or with a team.
Many businesses will give up using a large space to reduce cost and reduce pay because you are working from home so they can increase profit. To stay relevant and employed do one thing for yourself this year. Learn how to effectively use the various tools that can make working from home possible for you. Even if the place where you currently work doesn’t do this, learn for yourself. It is an added advantage that you can leverage on and you might get a surprise that increases your income because of it.
