PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | MAY 6, 2022
All Progressives Congress governors representing 11 Northern States have restated their commitment to the emergence of the 2023 president from the south.
It will be recalled that the ruling APC had earlier cancelled the rotational option which was used during the 2015 and 2019 general elections which led to the emergence of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari from the north as the APC president.
In what appears like a resort to keeping the gentleman agreement between the north and south, even though rotational presidency is not in the ruling [party’s constitution eleven governors from the zone have written to the president and the party’s electoral body that the south should produce the next presidential candidate of the party.
According to the governors who had earlier with others from the south held a close-door meeting with the president before reaching this decision, they said in the memorandum:
‘After careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023elections should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria. It is a question of honour for the APC, an obligation that is not in any way affected by the decisions taken by another political party. We affirm that upholding this principle is in the interest of building a stronger, more united and more progressive country.’
Highlights of the memorandum as seen by Pegasus Reporters among others are:
