PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | OCTOBER 15, 2022

Although, Cunnilingus and Fellatio fall under the umbrella word “Oral Sex”, it is highly imperative to get the terms right. Cunnilingus is the stimulation of the female genitals with the lips and tongue.

The parts of the female external genitalia stimulated in cunnilingus include the clitoris, labia major and minora, while some ladies prefer the insertion of the tongue through the vestibule or opening of the vagina.

Fellatio, on the other hand, is the stimulation of the male’s penis with the tongue. Fellatio or cunnilingus doesn’t define whether the partners involved have to be opposite sexes, as sexual preferences differ among heterosexual, homosexual and bisexuals; therefore, a male or female could perform oral sex with whatever gender of preferred sexual orientation.

Orgasm, which is the climax or peak of any expected sexual activities, is said to be possibly achieved during oral sex than the natural sex. During oral sex, the female clitoris is adequately stimulated and evidently, there is possibility of achieving orgasm easily and more pleasurably. Oral sex is commonly practiced by sexually-active adults. More than 85% of sexually-active adults aged 18-44 years reported having had oral sex at least once with a partner of the opposite sex.

A separate survey conducted during 2011 to 2015, in a Study, found that 41% of teenagers aged 15-19 years reported having had oral sex with a partner of the opposite sex. Partners engaging in oral sex sometimes find it fulfilling without the senses of guilt that comes with social orientations of coitus, among unmarried people, being bad or sinful in some cultures and religions.

However, here comes some concerns about engaging in oral sex. Because of little understanding about the dynamics involved in cunnilingus and fellatio, most partners engage in unprotected oral sex and such could pose some health challenges in the future.

Yes, oral sex is a sexual activity like coitus, which partners exchange body fluid, that could, possibly, be infected with microorganism and such could lead to several venereal diseases being contracted.

Hence, it is essential, to know that partners need to protect themselves with condoms if they have to engage in oral sex.
There might be the emergence of Mouth, Throat and Neck Cancers in the future for males engaging in cunnilingus, if they had practiced it with any partner infected with the Human Papillomavirus, HPV, the same virus responsible for cervical cancer.

Females can, likewise, be prone to having throat cancer, if during oral sex, the pre-ejaculatory fluids, from the orifice (the hole at the tip of the glands of the penis) of an infected Male with HPV get into their mouth, which arguably, is undeniable, as Fellatio sometimes could involve deep throat penetration, colloquially called Blow Job.

There’s also possibility of the female reinfecting herself, if she has HPV, as her partner that just stimulated her, with the tongue, might resume kissing her afterwards.
The part of the throat that is most likely to be infected include the Oropharynx, where the Palatine tonsils, are seated on the lateral walls of the oropharynx.

The Tonsils are lymphoid tissue, which could be inflamed when exposed to infection by microbes and such could interfere with breathing, causing serious respiratory problems.

It is obvious that the Human Papillomavirus, HPV, from an infected individual, contracted during oral sex could migrate to these tonsils, resulting in inflammation. Such inflammation is called Oropharygeal tonsillitis.

Human Papillomavirus virus infection might take months to up to ten years before incubation and manifestations of the Throat cancer.

Understanding the lymphatic system and drainage of the Neck regions makes it, also, possible to predict that the cancer cells might migrate to the Head region and also the Brain.

With the understanding of the health concerns, it will be very important to take precautionary measures when engaging in oral sex with one’s partner, protect the genitals during oral sex, be faithful to an oral- sex engaging partner and or get vaccinated for the Human Papillomavirus.

Conclusively, you could speak with your Medical doctor on concerns of your health if you had engage in oral sex with different partners.
