MOTORING: Avoid VIO Search On Your Vehicle With These Requirements

 

Often times, you find vehicles with damaged or broken emission or exhaust pipe. Some are so bad that they create noise as the vehicle throttles down the road. If this was not bad enough for your vehicle, consumption of fuel and public nuisance, should you be told that you’re cannot hid from the VIO because of the noise or smoke emitting from your vehicle?

There is a minimum requirement you must be armed with to beat the prying eye of officer of the Vehicle Inspection Service you run into occasionally on our roads. Although our courts have recently passed judgement on what their powers are, there’s is as always a tendency by motorists to be ignorant of such judgement and fall victim of the vehicle inspection officer, VIO. Here are the essentials that you’re required to have as you drive on Nigerian roads.

  • 1. Tyres: Ensure that your tires must not be older than 4 years and have a tread depth of at least 0.063 inches. This will convince the VIO that your tires are good enough to have your vehicle plying the roads.
  • 2. Emission: Often times, you find vehicles with damaged or broken emission or exhaust pipe. Some are so bad that they create noise as the vehicle throttles down the road.   • 3. Horn: Ensure the vehicle comes with a horn in good condition which enables other vehicles on the road to hear in a distance of at least 60 meters. However, the horn mustn’t sound harsh, unreasonably loud or whistle.
  • 4. Windshield wipers: The windshield wipers must effectively function to always wash the dirt from your windshield. Ensure you have water stored in the compartment that delivers liquid to clean the windshield when necessary.
  • 5. Number plates: This is for the purpose of identification and recognition. The vehicle must have both the front and rear valid number plates, not worn-out or defaced
  • 6. Body: your car is not the yeoman jalopy on the highway, so keep the body in good condition always and ensure that it’s washed regularly.
  • 7. Rear-view mirrors: Your vehicle must have rear-view mirrors well located to reflect your rear view for the distance of 60 meters when driving on the highway.
  • 8. Lights: Your vehicle must offer effective head lights as well as tail lights. Turn signals and brake lights also have to be well-functioning.
  • 9. Brake: Your foot brake has to stop the car at a distance of 8 meters at the speed of 32km/h. Moreover, parking brake ought to be good enough to hold the car.
  • 10. Other accessories: That involves other features including C-caution, jack, extinguisher etc.
