PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | APRIL 18, 2023
Most people might think the attainments of leadership positions are through mere luck or nepotistic edge over others. However, the smartest people, are those at the upper echelon in any organisation, institution or society.
Aside their very disciplined traits, they are very brilliant and know how to keep power under their control, for as long as they wanted. Their ability to checkmate their subjects and keep them under domination, most times, inadvertently, appear as corruption, intimidation and manipulation; in whatever, nomenclature, given to that, they have some skills, which keep their forces very active.
In the real sense, the Organisation Behaviour should give room for equity and fairness, howbeit, it’s uncommon of humans to want to be at the same level as everyone, it’s therefore, important to know that classes or categories are created through several methods to initiate inequalities; and such have resulted in several dissatisfactions, revolutions and insurrections.
I will highlight some points here to elaborate my arguments.
Some of the tools our Bosses use to dominate us include:
1. INDULGENCE
Anybody must be a fool to think your Boss doesn’t know what’s going on in the office, whether or not he is around. He knows who comes to work early, he knows who runs to town to do stuff, he knows the truants, but you know what? He might never have you reprimanded and such attitudes will never make you to be able to confront him, if you are unfairly treated, later on.
Your rights may be deprived or your Boss accrues benefits for himself and those he wants to, because, you are never punctual to know, what your work entails.
2. BAIT
It is known that Workers are more than their Bosses, yet, it’s surprising that the Bosses have so much power, when ideally, they are out-numbered by their subjects. This is how it works; most workers are like Esau, in the Bible, who have sold or can sell, their birthrights for a plate of portage.
Instead of the workers to ask for transparency and proper accountability of finances, most of them are interested in what comes to their pockets ‘right now’.
Poverty should not be an excuse, for this, because, there should be a form of delayed gratification in any disciplined individual; so when you, think because you are hungry, you took the little bait, it will definitely, be difficult for you to lay claim of your Leadership’s embezzlements and mismanagement of public funds because, you have taken crumbs rather than wait for the your rightful portion of the cake.
3. OVER RIGHTEOUS WORKERS
There’s this set of people that will love to show they are working more than others, yeah, it’s good to be industrious, however, one thing, most people don’t know is that your Bosses will never do anything that pays the Workers more than them, so most times, the hyperactive workers and those that would easily report their colleagues to Bosses, will end up short changing themselves.
There should be unity and mutual understanding, among subjects, if truly, we want fairness of treatment at workplace.
4. BOSSES ARE MORE STUDIOUS
Another thing, I observed about our Leaders is the ability to gather knowledge, not necessary Educational Degrees, they want to understand psychology, sociology and human temperaments and these knowledge keep them more and more powerful, that they become almost invincible, while the subjects on the other end are engrossed in watching movies, social media, petty talks and gossips.
All these keep widening the gaps between those at the Adminstrative wings and their subjects.
5. THEY HAVE RELATIVELY CLEAN HANDS
When we were at the Postgraduate School, most people understood that there were laxities and lackadaisical attitudes, among Research Supervisors and/or the College, in the handling of the Post Graduate Students’ Programs, nevertheless, when we complained, the Representative of the Provost of the College, came to the Post Graduate Hall of residence and said Post graduate students (all adults) were busy having sex in the Hall of residence, because there were reports of used condoms within the Hall of residence, instead of facing their studies; hence, the reasons why most students spend longer years in the school.
Did you see that? Most Bosses have relatively cleans hands, they don’t indulge in petty or trivial pursuits, while the Subjects keep their hand soiled in frivolities, thus the Bosses keep powers within their reach and give excuses for the maltreatment of their inferiors.
Remember “he Who Comes Into Equity Must Come With Clean Hands.”
6. IGNORANCE OF THEIR SUBJECTS
When an individual gets a job, the first thing, supposedly, to know should be the stated rules guiding the job and the rationality behind them. Unfortunately, most workers do not even sit down to study their Appointment Letters and ask questions, they just bump into agreements resulting in future embarrassments. This is an important tool in the hands of the leaders to keep them running in subjugating members of staff.
7. THE TRAITORS
The most effective tool to be used to subject people to oppressions are the same individuals among the people.
The Staff that will tell the Bosses, everything that transpired between the Staff members.
The worst of this is that the Bosses wouldn’t even, trust the fellow betraying his/her colleagues but they will keep the traitors active and favoured, as long as they can be used to satisfied their egoistic interests.
8. INCENTIVES
This looks like baits but I have decided to put it separately. The incentives may come like food materials and households utensils. Importantly to know is, the fact, that It is difficult to give proper accountability for these, thus, giving room for financial misappropriation, which may not be confronted or challenged.
All incentives or bonuses should be in numerical financial payments, if truly, we want transparency and fairness.
In conclusion, as much as there are many sides to the coin of Administration, the Managements’ Leaderships have great strategies to keep power within them and hence, assumption of dominance as long as they want to and all the masses could do is to always cry foul with no empirical outcomes.
