Nkechi’s Little Light
This little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I’m gonna lit it shine
Let it shine (2ce) for me
This is a song that reminds Nkechi of her mum the most. Anytime she thinks of or remembers her mum that song resonates for her.
Nkechi is a beautiful young girl who was orphaned at the age of twelve. For six years she was passed from one uncle or aunt to the other until she got into the university. As a student at the Lagos State University studying to become a teacher, Nkechi remembers her mum fondly even if it is difficult for her to remember her dad.
Nkechi was the only child of her late parents. So she has no siblings, although she has a lot of cousins. At the age of 18 and in the second year at the university, Nkechi already has her own home tutoring business that takes all her time. The good thing about the home tutoring business is that she is able to put to practice all that she is being taught at the university. Nkechi teaches primary school students of 4 different children at on different days.
“Where are you all going?” Nkechi asks her colleagues as they all rush out of the class
“We are going to the arcade” Says Tola
“What is happening at the arcade?” asks Nkechi
“Someone from the United States Consulate is around to talk to us about their library and some student exchange program” says Bidemi, another student in her department
“How come I didn’t hear about this?” asks Nkechi
“Well you are always rushing out of the lecture hall immediately class ends and never waits for any additional information given. I am even surprised you are here now.” Says Tola
“It is good I am here now o” says Nkechi
“Let us go” she says as she follows them out
The arcade is filled by the time the three ladies get there. It is almost impossible to find a place to seat. Finally, they decide to stand close to the front so they will be able to hear everything that the speaker is saying.
The speaker introduces himself as an old student of the Lagos State University. He graduated in 1998 and went to the United Stated for his Master’s degree a year after. There he helped some students with the exchange program. Now he has decided to come back to his Alma Mata to speak about a program for students who are already working. Students on full time study program who also find time to work and support themselves in school.
He and a few friends were able to get a grant to enable the students study entrepreneurship for a year in the united states.
Nkechi could not believe her ears. She was completely overjoyed. When the speaker asked that anyone who thinks they qualify for the program should come forward and put down their details so they can be sent an email with further details, Nkechi went forward.
3 Months Later
“Please can I check my email on your phone? My subscription expired yesterday” Nkechi asks Tola. They became friends the day they went to the arcade to listen to the Speaker from the United States Consulate.
“Sure. Here. Don’t finish my data o! Just check your email” Tola says handing Nkechi her phone
Nkechi logs in her email details and checks her mail. She has a new email. She reads it and starts dancing.
Tola checks her phone but she has logged out of her email.
“Why are you dancing?” Tola asks
“My Essay was accepted” Nkechi says
Tola looks at her without understanding
“What essay?” she asks
“The one for the one year program to study entrepreneurship in the USA” Nkechi replies
“Seriously?” Tola asks when Nkechi nods she also starts dancing
“Let us pray” Tola tells Nkechi
They thank God for the opportunity and asks Him to help Nkechi make Him proud and shine her light better.
5 Years Later
A young lady stands in front of some teenagers teaching them about entrepreneurship. Nkechi had gone on to complete her university degree in the United States as she did so well she was given a scholarship to continue her university education there. But she continued her friendship with Tola.
Tola has her own business too as she learned a lot from her friend Nkechi.
