PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | OCTOBER 6, 2024

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced the outcome of Saturday’s local government election with Action Peoples Party (APP) securing 22 out of the 23 chairmanship positions in the October 5 poll.

RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the election results in Port Harcourt, even as the electoral body has put results for Etche Local Government Area on hold due to the continuous process of tallying the votes.

Justice Adolphus Enebeli said that the declaration for Etche Local Government Area will be made in conjunction with the declaration for the 319 council seats in the area at a future time.

RSIEC chairman characterized the election as free, fair, and credible despite numerous challenges. He noted that the polls closed at 3 PM, reflecting a significant voter turnout.

While commending the residents for their patriotic spirit in participating in the voting process Enebeli also explained that the commission “adopted the principle of bi-location due to the circumstances”. This according to him was why the results were revealed at the Ministry of Justice Hall within the State Secretariat complex rather than at the Commission’s office located on Aba Road.

In attendance to witness the result collation and announcement were members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chairpersons of State Independent Electoral Commissions nationwide, and representatives from the Nigeria Bar Association, who served as observers during the election.

It will be recalled that Nyesom Wike, FCT and minister and former governor of Rivers State has been at loggerheads with Governor Sim Fubara over who’s the political lord of the state.
