Balancing Continuity and Renewal: Why APC Should Take-over Power in Edo State – By Adolphus Arebanmhen Aletor

“APC leadership at the federal level presents an opportunity for stronger federal-state collaboration. The APC’s presence at both state and federal levels can facilitate easier access to federal resources, funding, and support for state-level projects and initiatives. This collaboration can accelerate development, spur economic growth, and enhance infrastructure development across Edo State, leveraging synergies between state and federal priorities”

In the upcoming elections in Edo State, the decision regarding which party should assume power—whether the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Governor Godwin Obaseki or the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC)—carries significant implications for the state’s governance, stability, and developmental trajectory. Both perspectives deserve careful consideration to determine the best path forward for Edo State.

On one hand, maintaining continuity within the ruling PDP offers several advantages. Continuity ensures stability in governance and policy implementation. It allows for the seamless continuation of ongoing projects and initiatives, preventing disruptions that could hinder progress in critical areas such as infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, and education reform. Governor Obaseki’s administration has attempted to leave a mark in these domains and sustaining these efforts under PDP leadership may consolidate gains and ensure that the state continues on its current developmental trajectory.

A PDP succession will promote unity and cooperation within the ruling party. It will facilitate shared vision among successive leaders, enhances institutional memory, and fosters a cohesive approach to governance. This unity can translate into more effective decision-making processes and better coordination among government officials, thereby promoting efficiency and responsiveness in addressing the state’s challenges.

Conversely, there are compelling reasons to consider a transition to APC leadership in Edo State. A change in ruling party can bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to governance. The APC, as the opposition party, will introduce new ideas and strategies that could address persistent challenges in novel ways. This diversity of thought can stimulate policy innovation, promote accountability, and encourage a renewed focus on the needs and priorities of Edo State’s residents.

Transitioning to APC leadership can foster healthy competition among political parties especially when it is seamless. Competition incentivizes parties to perform better, deliver on promises, and prioritize the welfare of the electorate. It creates a dynamic political environment where parties strive to outdo each other in service delivery, responsiveness to public demands, and overall governance effectiveness. This competitive spirit can lead to improved governance outcomes and enhanced quality of life for the people of Edo State.

APC leadership at the federal level presents an opportunity for stronger federal-state collaboration. The APC’s presence at both state and federal levels can facilitate easier access to federal resources, funding, and support for state-level projects and initiatives. This collaboration can accelerate development, spur economic growth, and enhance infrastructure development across Edo State, leveraging synergies between state and federal priorities.

While recognizing the benefits of continuity under PDP leadership, the compelling arguments for renewed hope under APC leadership outweigh the advantages of maintaining the status quo. Transitioning to APC governance with Senator Monday Okpebholo aka Akpakomiza can bring fresh ideas, stimulate healthy competition, promote accountability, and enhance federal-state collaboration—all of which are crucial for advancing Edo State’s development agenda in general and Edo central (Esan) in particular. By electing APC leadership, Edo State can embrace a balanced approach that combines the benefits of continuity and change, setting the stage for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and improved governance in the years ahead.
