President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian students that none of them will drops out of tertiary institutions due to financial constraints. The president gave this assurance during the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State on Saturday where he spoke on government’s dedication to addressing the challenges facing higher education in Nigeria.
The president who was represented by Professor King-David Terna Yawe of the National University Commission (NUC), reminded the students that the difficulties facing the education sector were his primary concerns and pointed out that he signed the Student Loan Bill into law as a testament to his government’s commitment to supporting students.
“My government will not shirk its responsibilities in this area, (as) we will guarantee that educational institutions receive the necessary resources to effectively carry out their statutory responsibilities. One of my first actions as President of Nigeria was to sign the Student Loan Bill into law to put this into action.”
The president explained that the Act will provide interest-free loans to financially challenged students in all tertiary institutions which will be repaid at the students’ convenience upon securing employment.
“Under my leadership, and as I have outlined in my manifesto, no student will be forced to drop out of school due to an inability to pay tuition,” President Tinubu declared.
President Tinubu speaking to both academic and non-academic staff of the University said; “I would like to enjoin all the unions in our universities to cooperate with the government to deliver the needed development by ensuring an atmosphere of peace and tranquility on our campuses.
“On our part, we will ensure that motivational activities are put in place to ensure improved productivity. Reciprocative actions would be expected from our universities as the government works hard to raise the bar of a conducive teaching and learning environment.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. Dialogue, patience, and positive engagements are better means of achieving results than strike actions. Industrial disharmony does nothing but disrupt life, waste time, and elongate the academic calendar.
“Therefore, all avenues for dialogue must be explored and exhausted before strike actions are considered, and as the last resort,” he said.
