“There would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles and we will reverse all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes,” he said in his acceptance speech after he was unanimously elected as speaker of the assembly.
PEGASUS REPORTERS, LAGOS | JUNE 08, 2023
The state’s assembly set to enact laws for the protection of its indigenes against those who are claiming that Lagos is “No-Man’s Land” as there have been arguments especially as raised by Igbo residents in Lagos that the state is no man’s land and that it belongs to all Nigerian especially those with investment in the state.
It will be recalled that during the buildup of the 2023 general elections, the political space was divided as usual along ethnicity and religious colouration. The controversies were more pronounced in Lagos as the Igbo of the Southeast struggled hard to ensure that they decided who should govern the state. The Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos state during the election Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour whose mother is an Igbo was said to have been fielded to make their plot a reality and got over 90% of Igbo residents in Lagos
Reacting after the mass support other tribes and even Yoruba anti-Tinubu elements voted massively for Obi in Lagos thus granting him victory in the presidential poll in the state, many Yoruba during the governorship election made a volte-face and criticized the Igbo for attempting to misuse the opportunity of Lagos being a land of opportunity for all and sundry.
Since then, there have been calls from prominent Yoruba sons and daughters urging the government to ensure there is not a repeat of such in the state so that the economic stability being enjoyed will be maintained.
This may have prompted the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, in his speech after being reelected to lead the house disclosed that the state would promulgate laws for the protection of its indigenes.
According to a report by IntelRegion, he said as part of its legislative agenda, there would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles, and reversal of “all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes”.
Obasa, who hinted at some of the controversies in the build-up to the 2023 elections, including the argument that non-indigenes wanted to take over the state, declared that Lagos is a Yoruba land. “Lagos is Yoruba land as against the assertions of some people that it is a no man’s land.
“Therefore, part of our legislative agenda is to ensure the translation of laws passed by this House to the Yoruba language.
“We also aim at achieving our collective goals of creating a robust legislative framework that protects the interest of our people.
“Going forward in this wise, we are going to employ all legislative instruments for the support of the indigenes of Lagos.
“There would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles and we will reverse all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes,” he said in his acceptance speech after he was unanimously elected as speaker of the assembly.
A source who spoke with Pegasus Reporter on this matter said that part of the laws that the state assembly will be looking into and or reversing are mainly in the areas of land ownership and tenements.
“Our brothers from the Southeast were too loud and arrogant about their claim that Lagos is no man’s land. This was not the first time they’ve been making that annoying claim, but they took it to a higher height during the 2023 election by attempting to field a favorite candidate with very strong links to, and bias for their selfish interest. and you don’t expect the owners of the land to stand hands akimbo and watch”
Asked if such laws were not going to affect other Nigerian from non-Igbo speaking areas, he countered: “Why won’t the laws affect others? It’s an indigenization law. Some people’s selfish desires caused it and many others will be affected by it including some Yoruba”.
