KAMPALA: The burden of cancer in Uganda is projected to reach 40% in 2030 primarily due to changes in risk factors and population growth rate.
This was revealed by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) on Wednesday at the commission’s head offices at Kingdom Kampala, as one of the emerging equity issues under health.
Safia Nalule Juuko, the commission’s chairperson, told a delegation of legislators from Parliament’s equal opportunities committee that “presently, the Uganda Cancer Institute handles 65,000 patients annually”.
She said the number of new cases of children and adults registered under the cancer institute has increased from 3,500 (2015) to 7,400 (2021).
These statistics are contained in the EOC report presented to the legislators.
“It has been reported that the number of oncologists [specialists in diagnosing and treating cancer) and nurses trained to handle cancer cases are very few compared to the increasing number of cancer cases,” said Nalule.
“And those specialists are concentrated in Kampala.”
The delegation of MPs was led by Kole Woman MP Judith Alyek, who leads the parliamentary committee.
Weighing in on the matter, they advocated for the skilling of youths to plug the gaps in Uganda’s fight against cancer.
The EOC report also highlighted that there is an increased HIV infection rate among the adolescent population, especially girls.
“In Uganda, girls are four times more likely to be infected [with HIV] than young boys,” says the report.
