Former vice-president Abubakar Atiku’s hope for 2023 presidency seem to have taken a deep dig with the group led by Nyesom Wike withdrawing its support last night after a meeting of party big held in the private residence of the Rivers State governor.

It will be recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been battling the People’s Democratic Party, the PDP over its decision to field Abubakar Atiku, a northerner as against the party’s rotational presidential requirement to zone the seat to the south.

In a meeting attended last night by major political heavyweights from across the country, among whom are Governor Wike the host, Bode George, ex-governor Ayo Fayose, Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, ex-governors Mimiko of Ondo, Donald Duke of Cross River, Jonah Jang of Plateau and Governor Dankwambo of Gombe State, the group resolved to not participate in any elective task in support of the candidacy of Atiku until the party chairman, Iyiocha Ayu, abdicates the chair for a southern nominee.

Other party potentates present at the meeting include the following: Jerry Gana, a notable Middlebelt strongman of the party, Dan Orbi who is the South-south chairman of the PDP, ex-deputy Senate president Chibudom Nwuche and Senators Nnena Ukeje and Suleiman Nazif among several others.

It will be recalled that following from the unexpected winning of the PDP ticket by Atiku and the loss of same to the south, the duo of Abubakar and Nyesom Wike have been commanding different factions of the main opposition party in the 2023 general elections. With the latest development, a new twist has been added to the party’s palaver which pundit say is a major minus to its winning the 2023 presidential elections.
