Construction & Engineering: The Oresund Underwater Tunnel Bridge That Links Sweden And Denmark

With a length of nearly 8 kilometres connecting the Swedish coast to the man-made island of Peberholm in the middle of the strait, it is the longest combined road and rail bridge in all of Europe. The 4-kilometre Drogden Tunnel connects Peberholm with the Danish island of Amager and completes the crossing.

Man, according to the Holy Books was granted dominion over the earth, sea and air. The ability to do this, the Creator embedded in the intellect he fussed into the man. An aspect of these most amazing wonders of modern engineering is displayed in the Oresund underwater bridge linking Sweden and Denmark.

The Oresund Bridge spans the strait between Sweden and Denmark and combines a railroad and an automobile bridge. The bridge is a building designed to cross a physical barrier of water without obstructing the path as you can see in the pictures.

According to MilitaryBudget, Construction of the bridge started in 1995 and by 1999, it was completed and by 1 July 2000, it was opened for use.

The bridge links the Central and Western European rail and road networks with those on the Scandinavian Peninsula. The bridge serves as the primary conduit for Internet data travelling between Sweden and central Europe thanks to a data cable.

A horizontal girder running the entire length of the bridge supports two railway tracks underneath four lanes of traffic and weighs 82,000 tonnes.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Jorgen Nissen, Klaus Falbe Hansen, Niels Gimsing, and Georg Rotne all contributed to the bridge’s design, which was completed by Ove Arup and Partners.
