It stated that “the country for almost six years has been soaking in all manners of lopsidedness and nepotism” The statement further asks if “the injustices Nigeria has done to the North is so much for the bandits to do what they are doing to the rest of us and for Buhari to be looking the other way.”

Controversial Islamic Scholar Sheik Ahmad Gumi has called on the federal government to grant blanket amnesty to kidnappers and bandits from the north.

The sheik who recently visited the enclaves of some bandits in Niger state stated that this was necessary because he foresees a positive response from the bandits that have been terrorizing Niger and other states in the north.

According to the cleric while speaking with the media, said of his visit: “I am here to continue my mission to see that we have absolute peace in Nigeria and try to listen to the bandits’ grievances then see how we can stop this mayhem and carnage that is happening in the country,” he said.

Sheikh Gumi said that outcome of his meeting with the bandits, “ was very positive because we have warring factions. Each faction is saying that they have their own complaints and grievances which are very simple. There is hope that we can resolve this.”

“I want to recommend that the government should do to them exactly what they did to the Niger Delta militants and give them a blanket amnesty. Then if anybody will continue, we will deal with him.”

It will be recalled that the cleric had told the media earlier that the banditry in the north was fashioned after the kidnapping in the Niger Delta region of Southern Nigeria which was contained by granting amnesty to the youths from the region.

In reaction to Gumi’s recommendation, a coalition of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), has rejected the amnesty proposal.

In a joint statement, spokesmen of the group, Yinka Odumakin (South West), Chief Guy Ikokwu (South East), Senator Bassey Henshaw (South-South) and Dr. Isuwa Dogo (Middle Belt), disagreed with Gumi and accused the Fulani and the core North of perpetuating “pure injustice” to other parts of Nigeria.

The statement said that: “Part of those injustices must have been electing Buhari twice as president in spite of his scant regard for the sensitivity required of a multiple country like Nigeria”

It stated that “the country for almost six years has been soaking in all manners of lopsidedness and nepotism” The statement further asks if “the injustices Nigeria has done to the North is so much for the bandits to do what they are doing to the rest of us and for Buhari to be looking the other way.”

The coalition said that it’s currently in court to challenge the alleged nepotism and lopsidedness in the running of Nigeria’s affairs by the Buhari administration.
