The Coalition for A Better Nigeria, (CBN) has called on state government nationwide to emulate the pro-people example of Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos by initiating executive bills to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of pension Law 2007).
The group in a press statement made of the 15th of November 2020 and signed by its national president, Comrade AWA Bamiji, CBN hailed Sanwo-Olu decision saying that the abolition will reduce the cost of governance, signal selflessness and eradicate all forms of negative comments associated with the pension law. While reminding others that the Zamfara State House of Assembly had complied with the Court ruling, the group urged state governors to consider this option in the light that a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had earlier rule against such payment across all States in December 2019 and directed the Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Mallam, to review the pension laws of various States.
The statement “advised other States of the Federation and Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately toe this path of honour, which in turn, will build public confidence in the Nation’s administration.
“For all the sitting President, Vice President, Senate President, Honourable Speakers in both the National and State Assemblies, State Governors and their Deputies, an appreciable sacrifice should equally be made by cutting your Salaries and allowances. This is the only way, it would be a fair play with an assurance that all of you in power don’t rub Peter to pay Paul”
The statement salute the Nigerian populace for its resilience while congratulating the Lagos state governor for toeing the line of popular will “because (the action has) dawn a new era in our democratic experience that we could wake up to read the good news of intention of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of pension Law 2007) which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies in the State”
In a similar instance, the group salute the governor of Osun State for the award it got recently from ALGON. “We heartily congratulate Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State and Otunba Jumoke Ogunkeyede (JMK) on their meritorious Awards of Honour, Governor of the year and Humanitarian respectively, bestowed on you by the National Headquarter of the Association of Local Government Administration of Nigeria (ALGON) in Abuja”
In related statement, the group wished the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly a happy birthday anniversary. “We say many Happy Returns to Rt. (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, the Honourable Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly and Chief (Mrs) Folake Anike Adebayo, Eyelua of Odo Oro, Ekiti, on their 50th Birthday’s anniversary”
The Comrade AWA Bamiji led body also mourns the passage of the late Ghanaian leader and foremost Pan-Africanist, the late President John Jerry Rawlings. The statement added “On behalf of the entire Progressives across the World, we mourn the fallen Elephant of global politics, former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings.May his gentle soul rest in peace.
